These stones, it seems, can only be brandished by beings of extraordinary strength. Observe. These carriers can use the stone to mow down entire civilizations like wheat in a field.”
Greetings from the desert fellow CBSI members. What is that saying… A picture says a thousand words? How about a picture says 10 years, 18 movies, equaling 38 hours, 9 minutes of total screen time to the tune of just shy of $6 Billion in the US alone.
What about if all of this, meaning the MCU, was started from ONE act of what some call a God?
Furthermore, what if this “God”, was only acting in the best interest of the Universe? And that act caused a ripple effect no matter how big or small depending on the individual that set in motion a beginning and an ending we will all be privy to starting this Thursday, April 26th. Finally, what if that Last Supper depiction above, was because of this act below:
OUT WHERE? OUT THERE…
Okay why all this cryptic back and forth? Well, this article is going to have some fact, some theory, and some comic education. Let’s start with this, the above still is from the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie.
It’s a conversation The Collector has with Starlord and Gamora. The breakdown is this: The above large metal guy is Eson the Searcher, he is indeed a Celestial (Much more on these to follow).
If you notice, in his staff is a Infinity Stone. More specifically the Power Stone which is the most powerful of the six. Alright, as this scene plays out we see him use the staff to decimate everything. The strong rumor is that the planet Eson destroys is none other than Thanos home, Titan.
There is belief that because if the destruction of his world, and no way of him being able to stop it, he becomes focused on tracking down all the Infinity Stones so he could have ultimate power from the very thing that took everything away. More to follow on this later in the article.
Some of you may be saying huh? What? Well in order to paint this picture per se, we need to learn more about The Celestials. More specially, who they are, their history, and key issues. This humanoid Alien race have their imprint across a lot of the Marvel landscape.
I would explain these guys as the proverbial Judge, Jury, and Executioner of the Universe. They are roughly 2000 feet tall encased in body armor. The origin, or what they exactly look like is still unknown.
Alright, so what’s their deal? These giants have visited earth four times each time altering the history. For the sake of this piece, we are going to look at the 1st two trips to Earth. The 1st visit was roughly 1 million years ago.
The Celestials performed genetic testing on Earth’s highest life form, which was at that time apes. The Celestials knew that these would eventually evolve into what were known as humans. Pay special attention to this: Testing this versatility of human genes, they created two subspecies of humanity. The Eternals (Sound Familiar?), and Deviants.
Their legacy to the human race was to implement a dormant DNA complex, which would one day permit mutations. Almost like a ticking time bomb of sorts.
The second Celestial trip to earth happened roughly 25,000 years ago. This was to evaluate what had transpired from their 1st visit. Witnessing what the Deviants had become, including their primitive technology, the Celestials decided to eradicate the entire race.
Remember when I spoke to Judge, Jury, Executioner? That’s what I mean with their actions.
Alright follow me closely here, as this is where Thanos comes into play. Think of these Deviants as physical Mutants and The Eternals as genetic perfection. Now, it is assumed that these mutations programmed within the DNA on Deviants pre extinction, also were in The Eternals.
This would cause them to mutate potentially and become Deviants. Ok, so what? Well as The Eternals race became more powerful it caused a Civil War and they split into different factions across the Universe. That’s why you see some on earth for example.
Also, some on Titan, home of Thanos. Now, let’s take a step back. Just what is Thanos? He was born with the physical appearance of a mutant among Eternals. He is full Eternal with a Deviant gene. This is why he is so much more powerful than the other Eternals.
Also why he looks the way he does, as he is a hybrid among his own people.
Alright go on… With this backstory and knowledge, now let’s revisit what Kevin Feige said recently about Thanos in Infinity Wars the movie. “He’s from a planet called Titan that’s no longer inhabited because of things he thought he could help prevent. What he feared most happened, and the planet and everybody on it basically went extinct. He vowed to not let that happen again”
Remember the quote from Thanos within the trailer – “In time, you will know what it’s like to lose. To feel so desperately that you’re right. Yet to fail all the same. Dread it. Run from it. Destiny still arrives”
Finally, let’s put all of this together to form a theory that is growing stronger. Different from Infinity Wars in comic form where he was obsessed with Death, it looks as if Thanos is a victim here and witnessed his entire planet become eviscerated.
Due to this, he may be looked at as a survivor of unspeakable tragedy. So when the above scene happens in the GOTG movie, that is indeed Titan getting destroyed. With this, Thanos becomes enraged with the sole purpose of payback, and at some point revenge on The Celestials. Want further fire to flame this thought process?
The below still comes further into that scene. On the left seems to be someone with purple skin in agony over what is happening. Who else has purple skin? Thanos…
Your brain hurt yet? Again, this article has all three components fact, comic knowledge, and theory, or how about another word we all know well, speculation!
My goal in this was to piece all of this together from many different sources to give you a clear, concise path that blocks out all the other noise.
This is why I started with the picture is a thousand words statement. That picture, a small snapshot in time potentially was the Genesis of the last 10 years…Time will tell.
Now let’s move on to what many of you want, comic issues of relevance right? Let’s start with the Celestials themselves. There have been many different types of Celestials throughout history.
However, we will focus on the 10 that were prominent during this time. The all hold a specific duty when they visit planets. As one group in unison, they are as powerful as an entity.

Other Important Issues Of Interest
The birth of a Celestial is a grand and horrible cosmic event, but little is known for certain how they reproduce. Only one Celestial has ever been observed coming into the universe and it was a cataclysmic event, to say the least. Thor witnessed a Celestial’s birth within the midst of the Black Galaxy, a bioverse composed of living matter.
Astonishing X-Men #61
Issue explains how the Celestials came into existence.
The Ultimates 2 #5
1st appearance of a First Firmament
The First Firmament was the very first universe, the First Cosmos, to ever exist. The First Firmament was the creator of several beings including the Aspirants and the Celestials
Marvel Boy Vol 2 # 5
1st appearance of Aspirants
The Aspirants were the result of the First Firmament’s loneliness, which led him to create life to have beings who served and entertained him. They battled The Celestials in a War, for the dominion of all existence
Ironman Vol 5 #12
1st appearance of Godkiller
The Godkiller was a powerful weapon created eons ago by the Aspirants to battle the Celestials during the final battle of the Celestial War.
Well, that’s it for this week. There is a lot more cosmic entities within the Marvel world such as The Living Tribunal and The Beyonders as examples. We will leave those for another time as they are intriguing storylines.
IMO, the whole Cosmic Universe is just now starting to get the recognition it so richly deserves. It was truly ahead of its time. We are now just starting to learn how some of this was created. I have always been a believer in the fact there are other things…Out There.
In our world there will always be that age old argument of Religion vs. Science. I look at it as always wanting to know more. Examples of this play out in our movies right?
Whether it’s Jodie Foster in Contact meeting Higher Beings thru the ghost of her Dad, or more recently Matthew McConaughey’s trip into the Black Hole in Interstellar this stuff is fascinating!
Those types of acts always leaves you with more questions than answers. Will we ever get those answers in our lifetime or present existence? Perhaps someday we’ll know.
In the meantime, we always have comics as a form of escapism or look into what very well may be the future. I just wish those answers came now.
Enjoy Infinity Wars!
