Covering the Spread 10: Self control
Welcome back comic book speculators, and everyone else. If you’ve never read one of my articles before I’d suggest going back to issue 8 where we explained everything we do here. This week I wanted to break the cycle of talking about Spider-Man every week (I might have a problem) so I decided to take a week off from Marvel altogether. It’s good to get look at things from a new angle sometimes.
As always I’ll remind everyone that these numbers won’t help if you don’t bother to judge the books for yourself! Just because a book is listed as NM doesn’t mean it really is.
Spawn 1
This is a book I’m sure there are a lot of differing opinions on. I want to reiterate what I’m sure most of you already know, but there are so many of these. Most estimates have the print run over 1 million. To give you a comparison Action Comics 1000 came out this year with endless variant covers and so much fanfare. That book was estimated at about 500,000. Half of what was printed for Spawn 1. That being said, I love this book. As a kid I loved the old Spawn movie and I’m very excited about the new one. So let’s hop into the numbers
Without Pressing:
Average Raw Price | 22.14 |
10 Copies | 221.37 |
Shipping Fees (EST) | 100 |
Grading Fees (EST) | 180 |
Selling Fees | 87.20 |
Total Costs | 588.58 |
9.8 Av Price | 9.6 Av Price | 9.4 Av Price | 9.2 Av Price
141.59 | 80.99 | 69.66 | 67.25
2 Copies | 3 Copies | 4 Copies | 1 Copy | Total Value |
283.18 | 242.97 | 278.64 | 67.25 | 872.04 |
Well regardless of how many there are this book sells! 110 9.8 copies have sold in the past few months! We would be looking at an initial investment of $501.38 and a profit of $283.46. That’s a spread of +28.35 and an ROI of 56%. Sounds like this is a better idea than I thought it would be. I will say that the average raw price was a little harder than usual to calculate here. This book is often sold raw in bundles, but that might make it the perfect target for this kind of investment.
With Pressing:
Average Raw Price | 22.14 |
10 Copies | 221.37 |
Shipping Fees (EST) | 100 |
Grading Fees (EST) | 180 |
Pressing Fees (EST) | 120 |
Selling Fees | 96.90 |
Total Costs | 718.28 |
9.8 Av Price | 9.6 Av Price | 9.4 Av Price
141.59 | 80.99 | 69.66 | |
3 Copies | 5 Copies | 2 Copies | Total Value: |
424.77 | 404.95 | 139.32 | 969.04 |
Well in this case pressing looks to be hurting us rather than helping. Our initial investment would move to $621.38 and our profits would be $250.76. That’s actually over $30 less than it would’ve been if we hadn’t got them pressed. My advice is don’t be afraid to sell a 9.2 copy, skip the pressing and save yourself some cash.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures 1
Doesn’t that title just roll off the tongue? I have a feeling a lot of you have never even heard of this book and that’s why I wanted to talk about it today. I’m bending the rules a little on our numbers because there have been no sales for 9.2 graded copies but maybe we can change that. TMNT Adventures began as a comic book adaptation of the animated show. But much like Batman Adventures 12, that means that characters who appeared in the show first made their debut in this series.
This issue is the first appearance of Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady. That’s a lot of 1st appearances for one book! I haven’t been a big fan of the Michael Bay movies but TMNT is a franchise that is here to stay and this will always be an important book. It really deserves more attention.
Without Pressing
Average Raw Price | 15.36 |
10 Copies | 153.63 |
Shipping Fees (EST) | 100 |
Grading Fees (EST) | 180 |
Selling Fees | 82.52 |
Total Costs | 516.15 |
9.8 Av Price | 9.6 Av Price | 9.4 Av Price | 9.2 Av Price
333.72 | 87.84 | 46.99 | 40 | |
2 Copies | 3 Copies | 4 Copies | 1 Copy | Total Value |
333.72 | 263.52 | 187.96 | 40 | 825.20 |
Okay so as I mentioned there has not been a sale for a graded 9.2 yet, but I think $40 is a reasonable estimate. Regardless I don’t think that’s going to make much of an impact here. We have an upfront investment of $433.63 and profits of $309.06! That’s a spread of +30.90 and an incredible ROI of 71%! Well worth your time to pick up some copies!
With Pressing:
Average Raw Price | 15.36 |
10 Copies | 153.63 |
Shipping Fees (EST) | 100 |
Grading Fees (EST) | 180 |
Pressing Fees (EST) | 120 |
Selling Fees | 103.38 |
Total Costs | 657 |
9.8 Av Price | 9.6 Av Price | 9.4 Av Price
166.86 | 87.84 | 46.99 | |
3 Copies | 5 Copies | 2 Copies | Total Value: |
500.58 | 439.20 | 93.98 | 1033.76 |
Once we get that hypothetical 9.2 price out of the picture we can look at some real numbers. Our upfront costs would be $553.62 and our profits go to $376.76. That puts the spread at +37.68 and our ROI at 68%. That is a lower ROI than we were at before pressing but with my 9.2 price being a guess I would still press these.
Also before I move on I have to mention, this book has a Canadian Newsstand variant. I didn’t even know Archie comics did that!
Preacher 1
Yes Preacher! I know the TV show already came out and the prices took a bit of a dip. That makes it the perfect time to buy! The show still has fans, and regardless this will always be an iconic run!
Without Pressing:
Average Raw Price | 84.50 |
10 Copies | 844.98 |
Shipping Fees (EST) | 100 |
Grading Fees (EST) | 180 |
Selling Fees | 185.57 |
Total Costs | 1310.55 |
9.8 Av Price | 9.6 Av Price | 9.4 Av Price | 9.2 Av Price
315.93 | 169.62 | 150 | 114.99
2 Copies | 3 Copies | 4 Copies | 1 Copy | Total Value |
631.86 | 508.86 | 600 | 114.99 | 1855.71 |
Well I think it’s safe to say it’s a good time to buy! We would have an upfront investment of $1124.98 and a profit of $545.16. That’s a spread of +54.52 and an ROI of 48%. That may not be as high the other books today but that’s still a great return!
With Pressing:
Average Raw Price | 84.50 |
10 Copies | 844.98 |
Shipping Fees (EST) | 100 |
Grading Fees (EST) | 180 |
Pressing Fees (EST) | 120 |
Selling Fees | 209.59 |
Total Costs | 1454.56 |
9.8 Av Price | 9.6 Av Price | 9.4 Av Price
315.93 | 169.62 | 150 | |
3 Copies | 5 Copies | 2 Copies | Total Value: |
947.79 | 848.10 | 300 | 2095.89 |
If we get these pressed we would be investing $1244.98 and making $641.33 in profits. That’s a spread of +64.13 and an ROI of 51%. Plenty of money to be made here and I would suggest the pressing again. There are a lot of auctions that ended at lower prices bringing the 9.8 prices down here but there have been plenty of “buy it now” copies sold for over $300 and even one recently over $400 so avoid the auctions when you’re selling this one.
Well that’s all I have for you this week! As always thank you very much to the Comic Collateral App for our pricing data. I hope you all enjoyed this weeks article and assuming I’m not too distracted by football I’ll see you in a week!
