Covering The Spread 14: Ask and Ye Shall Receive

Hello Comic Book Investors!  Welcome back to the newest edition of Covering the Spread.  This week we have our first requested book (it only took us 14 articles) so we will be covering that book and a couple others that I was interested in.

Without further adieu let’s move onto some numbers!

Thanos 13

Okay so full disclosure: I have not read this book.  It’s on my list but between work and school my reading time is very limited.  I don’t however live under a rock so I’m well aware of Cosmic Ghost Rider and why there is hype around this book.  When it first came out I was riding the hater wave.  But this book clearly has some staying power.  It’s still being sold very frequently and people love the character.  But that’s the debate, is it really a key if it’s not a new character?  I say yes.  My thought is if a black costume, or changing your name to Nightwing makes it a key then this does too.

Average Raw Price 77.72
10 Copies 777.18
Shipping Fees (EST) 100
Grading Fees (EST) 180
Selling Fees 111.66
Total Costs 1168.84

9.8 Av Price 9.6 Av Price 9.4 Av Price 9.2 Av Price
187.72 113.63 83.31 67
2 Copies 3 Copies 4 Copies 1 Copy Total Value
375.44 340.89 333.24 67 1116.57

Well maybe I was right to be a hater.  This book is going to be around awhile, I have agreed on that.  But these raw prices are just too high. This would lead us to an upfront investment of $1057.19 and we would have a loss of $52.27.  No Bueno.  Personally I would say if you want a copy you should buy it already graded but 9.8’s sell well so If you want to go deep and pre-screen 25 copies for 9.8 it might not be the worst idea.

Amazing Spider-Man 4

Well here we have the first appearance of another hyped up modern character Silk!  It’s a Spider-Man book so I have to be a fan of it right? Not exactly.  I did buy several copies a few years ago after the initial hype but I’ve sold all but 1 since then.  I think Silk is a cool character, but I’m still very apprehensive about these Sony movies.  They remind me a lot of DC.  At this point I think they are just announcing projects to see what our reaction is and then making what we seem the most excited about.  But we’re here to too at numbers so let’s check them out.

Average Raw Price 37.05
10 Copies 370.55
Shipping Fees (EST) 100
Grading Fees (EST) 180
Selling Fees 70.81
Total Costs 721.36

9.8 Av Price 9.6 Av Price 9.4 Av Price 9.2 Av Price
114.65 64.60 59.99 45
2 Copies 3 Copies 4 Copies 1 Copy Total Value
229.30 193.80 239.96 45 708.06

Unfortunately this doesn’t look good either.  We would have an upfront investment of $650.55 and come away with a loss of $13.30.  That’s not as our last book but a loss is obviously not great.  Since I have had several copies of this one I can safely say this isn’t a great option for investing right now.  Out of all the copies I bought years ago only the one I kept had a chance at 9.6 or 9.8.  If you really want a copy just buy one that’s already been graded.  For about $30 more than your raw copy you can get a 9.6 and I think that’s a great deal.

Amazing Spider-Man 212

Yes we’re doing 2 Spider-Man books this week deal with it!  I’m a little conflicted on this book.  On the one hand, I’ve seen the tweet.  I don’t think Hydro-Man will be in Far From Home. But on the other hand Hydro-Man is awesome.  If it’s a character that’s in the animated series you should own their first appearance! Even nobodies like Madame Web!

Without Pressing:

Average Raw Price 60.45
10 Copies 604.48
Shipping Fees (EST) 100
Grading Fees (EST) 180
Selling Fees 151.40
Total Costs 1035.88

9.8 Av Price 9.6 Av Price 9.4 Av Price 9.2 Av Price
385.52 151.50 50 88.5
2 Copies 3 Copies 4 Copies 1 Copy Total Value
771.04 454.50 200 88.50 1514.04

You didn’t think I was going to leave you with nothing but stinkers did you? We would have an upfront investment of $884.48 and a profit of $478.16.  That’s a spread of +47.82 and an ROI of 54%!  That’s more like it!  Plus if you don’t actually pay much attention to those numbers that 9.4 price was from before the rumors began to spread about an on screen appearance.  I personally guarantee you can get more than $50 for a 9.4 copy.  Just look at the prices 9.2’s are getting!

With Pressing:

Average Raw Price 60.45
10 Copies 604.48
Shipping Fees (EST) 100
Grading Fees (EST) 180
Pressing Fees (EST) 120
Selling Fees 201.41
Total Costs 1205.89

385.52 151.50 50
3 Copies 5 Copies 2 Copies Total Value:
1156.56 757.50 100 2014.06

I highly recommend pressing here.  That would land our upfront investment at $1004.48 and our profits at $808.17!  That’s a spread of +80.82 and an insane ROI of 80%!  If Hydro-Man really does make an appearance on the big screen I can’t even imagine what these profits are going to look like!

Wrap Up

Well everyone that’s all I have for you today!  If anyone else has suggestions on books you’d like me to cover let me know down in the comments.  Thanks as always to Comic Collateral for our pricing data. What do you think the future holds for Cosmic Ghost Rider and Silk?  Do you think Hydro-Man will be in Far From Home? Should I stop asking so many questions? Let’s discuss in the comments to pass the time until next week!
