Doomsday Clock: Revisiting the Charlton Universe

I have to admit it, I just love when one of you sends out an article out of the blue and this is no exception. Thanks to matthewc72 for this bit of all-new, yet classic, spec info!

It’s common knowledge that the characters of the Watchmen Universe were based on pre-existing characters from the Charlton Universe. The brilliant Geoff Johns has stayed true to that tradition with the characters of Mime and Marionette, who first appear in this week’s Doomsday Clock Book. Not only are the characters really interesting and potentially have a huge role in the DC Universe going forward, they may also breathe life into some comic books that are either extremely scarce or relegated to the $1 bins.

Mime and Marionette are undoubtedly adaptations of Punch and Jewelee who first appeared in Charlton Comics’ Captain Atom #85. Due to the paper stock and low print runs these issues are extremely hard to find in good shape. In the past, they were only collected by completists and fans of Captain Atom or Blue Beetle, or artist Steve Ditko. Beware of a later reprint by Modern Comics which is not as rare.

What about appearances in the DC universe after the Charlton Universe was acquired by DC? As far as I can tell there is only one appearance and it is fleeting. The characters appear in Secret Origins 28 in the origin of Nightshade, drawn by a young Rob Liefeld!

Anyway, happy hunting. If you find either of these quickly they should be pretty cheap.
