Indie Spotlight Series 50

Hello everyone and welcome back to another edition of Indie Spotlight Series. After several slower weeks, that couldn’t be further from the case this time around. Plenty of great reads and potential spec opportunities, so without wasting any time let’s jump right in.

Niobe She is Death 1

Stranger Comics

Niobe spec is strong right now and it’s pretty much all tied to the supposed HBO series that will be in development soon. I’m here to tell you though that there is more here than just spec value to this one. The series has developed a huge following and that’s because of the substance of the story. Fantastic world building and spectacular art are two contributing factors that can’t go unnoticed. But back to spec, with the HBO deal supposedly set you never know what books will see heat when the story hits streaming services. I like the Jae Lee cover B on this one along with the Notorious B.I.G. homage that was launched as a Kickstarter. Sure to have a low print run, I think this one is a no brainer if you can find cover A or B at cover price or in that neighborhood.

Undiscovered Country 1

Image Comics

Well it seems like everyone has been talking about this book for years, and it’s finally here. With a Movie or  T.V. Deal already in the works the chances of this book flying under the radar are none to never. However the story is definitely good enough for me not to pass up. I like both of the regular covers for sure but  there are so many store variants It’s really a crap shoot as to which ones will take off. I think the only safe bets are the SDCC Ashcan and the NYCC ashcan. That being said I will be looking to pick up covers A and B and one store variant, since I missed out on both Ashcans that are selling for over $100.

Crone 1 of 5

Dark Horse

I really like the premise on this one and feel it could easily be adapted by what I have seen so far. A woman named Bloody Bliss who was called the Sword Savior and Champion of Men has been called to battle for one last time. I absolutely love the cover for this book and it looks like finding a 9.8 copy may be a challenge. Dark Horse comics has some big things going on and this is one I’m not gonna sleep on.

Void Walker 1

Alterna Comics

I love Alterna Press and I feel I’m not alone in saying that in the speculator community. I mean, what more could you ask for than a quality story for $1.50. I think smart speculators are snatching these books up when they find a story that meets their standards. That being said this one has peaked my interest. A Hitman that bonds with an ancient creature the wall between two worlds will be broken down. Has a Stranger things Vibe to it but may be a little bloodier by the looks of it. I will def be looking to pick up a couple copies of this one tomorrow to hold on to for a while.

Wild Strawberries at World’s End

Source Point Press

Not a ton is reveled in the preview for this book other than its about a supernatural murder in the 90’s in South Korea. This could be hit or miss but with Source Points secondary market success its one I wont pass up at cover price. ZERO listed on eBay as of now.

Sleeper Pick

B B Free

Boom! Studios

Another book this week that I really like the premise too is BB Free  This one follows a little girl on her journey to find out who she really is. She hosts an underground radio show in a small town swamp community. But this is not your ordinary situation. She lives in  a world where half the population has been killed by a plague that ate greed over 100 years ago. Oh yeah and she just happens to be the chosen one….. I’m in. It has all the factors. Substance, Diversity, and a Unique story that seems very adaptable to the big screen. Is also artist Royal Dunlap’s debut in comics.

Worth A Read

Strange Skies Over East Berlin

This is a book that kind of went under the radar after Boom Studios last two home runs in Once and Future and Something is Killing the Children, however it should not be overlooked. I really enjoyed the first issue as it follows a James Bond esq character who is a part of the secret police and is stationed in East Berlin. One night a strange sight appears in the sky and our main character is tasked with finding out what it actually was. What he finds is unnerving to say the least.  He meets with one of the men who was first on site to investigate this strange light, and he sees his demise right before his own eyes. One idea rings out throughout this book and its “the truth will always catch up to you”. The quality of the story is on point and I can’t wait to see where they take this book. Highly recommend picking this one up.
