New Media Spec

Hello again comic book investors and welcome back to Covering The Spread!  This week my wife and I started the new Amazon Prime series The Boys and we absolutely loved it.  No surprise, the first issue of The Boys has made its way onto the best selling books this week.  So this week I wanted to focus on a few books, including The Boys that will be making their way onto streaming platforms soon!

The Boys 1

As I just mentioned this book has really started to pick up steam.  But, if you’ve been following me for awhile now, you know I don’t like to buy books when they’re already hot.  So, is that still holding true for The Boys?

Average Raw Price 83.92
10 Copies 839.15
Shipping Fees (EST) 100
Grading Fees (EST) 180
Selling Fees 119.30
Total Costs 1238.45

9.8 Av Price 9.6 Av Price 9.4 Av Price 9.2  Av Price
204 120 90 65
2 Copies 3 Copies 4 Copies 1 Copy Total Value
408 360 360 65 1193

Right now we expect upfront costs of $1119.15 and should come away with a loss of $45.45.  That’s a spread of -4.55.  So yes it seems like it.  I should’ve seen this coming and told you all to buy this book a couple months ago, but it’s hard to keep track of everything that’s coming down the line sometimes.

But, that’s what today’s article is for.

Reborn 1

Did you forget that Netflix was making a Reborn movie?  We haven’t heard any news in awhile and the market sure has turned away from these books. When the original announcement was made virtually every cover shot up to $8-$15.  So now that the dust has settled where are we?

Well it isn’t even worth doing a spread because there haven’t been any graded sales in 9.4 or 9.2, and it’s been a long time since a 9.6 sold.  This book has a high print run so copies abound.  But, that doesn’t mean it can’t have success.  Virtually everything can be had for cover price and I think that’s a great bet.  I’ve included my two favorite covers above.  Stash some of these at cover, or even buy some graded copies.  A 9.8 of the Jock cover just sold for $45 shipped!  I think all covers will be a $100 9.8 if this movie is popular, and well, it’s on Netflix.  Everyone is going to watch it.

Invincible 2

This is the upcoming series I am the most excited about. I’ve talked in the past about how much I love this series, but I cannot stress enough how great it is.  This issue is one that I think actually has potential to be every bit as valuable as the first.  Not only do a lot of people cut down their orders for second issues, but this has an insane amount of first appearances.  Let’s go down the list.

1st Teen Team – Basically the Teen Titans of the Invincible universe.

1st Atom Eve – A member of the Teen Team and INCREDIBLY important to the series (I won’t spoil why if you’ve never read) I guarantee she will be in the show.  Kinda like the Invincible version of Scarlet Witch.

1st Robot – Another member and major player throughout the series. Basically their version of Cyborg.

1st Rex Splode – Another member and Atom Eve’s boyfriend.  His name should spell out his deal.

1st Dupli-Kate – Another member and co-winner of the coveted Brandon’s favorite superhero name (tied with her brother).

1st Mauler Twins – Mid-tier villains throughout the run.

Also of note this issue is the first mention of Viltrum and the Viltrumites, as well as the first appearance of the Teen Teen Base.  I expect all of these characters to play a role in the show.

So, with all that in mind, let’s check out the numbers.

Average Raw Price 60
10 Copies 600
Shipping Fees (EST) 100
Grading Fees (EST) 180
Selling Fees 118.40
Total Costs 998.40

9.8 Av Price 9.6 Av Price 9.4 Av Price 9.2  Av Price
254 104 76 60
2 Copies 3 Copies 4 Copies 1 Copy Total Value
508 312 304 60 1184

Well, I do have to say, there was only one raw sale for this book.  I don’t think there will be many out there.  At any rate we’d expect upfront costs of $880 and profits of $185.60.  That’s a spread of +18.56 and an ROI of 21%.  Those aren’t especially great numbers.  That, plus the lack of available raw copies means this is a book to buy graded.  If this show is a hit, I expect 9.8s to be $500 books easily.  I think given how much advertising we’ve seen for the boys, we’ll see a similar push for Invincible.  Amazon wants to start moving into that streaming market, and we all know they aren’t afraid to spend money.

Wrap Up

Well, everyone that’s all I have this week.  Do you think streaming spec will ever be as big as the big screen?  Or were Umbrella Academy and The Boys outliers?  Let me know what you think down in the comments and I’ll see you in a week!
