Running Back: The Silencer

Hello everyone, it’s been awhile since I did a running back article but this one also doubles as a first you may have missed. Here you will be getting some info and a few goodies to pick through along with a mini review centered around The Silencer, so let’s get into it “Quiet First.”

Depending on the type of first appearance person you are, you may consider one of the preview pages debuting in the D.C. books leading up to the release of the Silencer #1 as her first appearance. But for the sake of this article we will be going with Silencer #1.

I admit I purchased the first issue because well, that’s just my thing. While I did have intentions to flip through it if I managed to get to the bottom of my weekly pile it was a recommendation from our very own Clint Joslin which caused me to move it up the pile as he asked for my opinion on the book. Thanks Clint!

Time for a mini review? I think so.

Honor Guest is the name of a mild mannered mother and wife who is also the former assassin The Silencer. In the first issue we are introduced to Honor while shopping with her son. As she begins to put her grocery’s into her car she is confronted by a large man with a gun.

After very limited words are exchanged she stabs the man with a stack of colored pencils and whispers “shhh” forming a sound proof barrier around her and the attacker so her child doesn’t hear as she completely dismantles the man. Now at this point I was already hooked, this seemed more along the lines of a great Image first then a new D.C. title.

The issue goes on giving us a deeper look into the life of Mrs Guest and ends off with a wonderful appearance from none other then Talia Al Ghul! If Talia is asking for help from anyone then you can assume they are no push over. The issues cliffhanger is the women being approached by the assassins Brecher and Bloodvessel great way to keep readers coming back.

Just a nice piece of random info and a testament to how deep The Silencer is being embedded into the D.C. universe, in Dark Days the casting #1 Batman speaks to Talia about her bringing back a great assassin in which she reassures him he has nothing to worry about from The Silencer or herself. If you are on Batmans radar then you must be one bad (shhhhh).

Also probably a node to fans, in that same scene Talia gives Batman Shazams dagger and it just so happens that Shazam had a villain named the Silencer (1st appearance world’s finest #274) nice job D.C.

Issue #2 starts with our hero(?) Facing off with 2 assassins Breacher(not to be confused with the portal hopping D.C. comics Breacher) and BloodVessel (not to be confused with Flashes new villain Blood work, who I wrote about HERE).

Breacher is not much to get excited about but it should be noted that this is the first full appearance of blood vessel (cameo at the end of issue #1) as he has a rather unique power of being sentient blood which operates in host bodies. An interesting concept and with the time the writers focused on explaining the details of his powers I think this will not be the last we see of him. We get introduced to more fringe characters such as

Detail and Aftermarket(sounds horrible but it works very well in the context of the book….trust me) as the world building continues. We end off with another showdown brewing between our hero and a large group of assassins inside what I can only explain as a Costco for killers.

This book is pretty amazing seriously you have to read it to appreciate how great it is. This issue also ends with a 5 page preview of the new book Curse of Brimstone(which looks great) and shows the origin along with a full appearance and name of Brimstone so if preview 1st are your thing then here is some more gold for you to mine.

Issue #3 Action Intrigue and Espionage! More comic greatness along with the first appearance of the man behind it all. The one who appears to be the big bad of the series who until now was only mentioned, Mr. Quietus. Silencer….Quietus???? There is something there I just can’t put my finger on it.

Anyway this guy is not just a run of the mill boss he looks as if he is made of stone and proves he has the money and the power to call shots like the best of them as he commissions a department of defense satellite to….well I won’t spoil it but let’s just say he doesn’t play around. Over all 3 issues in and 1 arc down I am honestly loving this book, from the story, the use of powers in interesting ways, and the mystery i think it’s worth the few bucks.

While finishing issue #3 I thought, u know the only thing that could make this book better for me is an appearance from a great D.C. comics assassin. The final page gave me Deathstroke. Also a 5 page preview of the upcoming book the Immortal Men Cant wait for issue 4.

So here is the scores:

  • Run to read score: 5 out of 5 read this book it’s great! This team of Dan Abnett with John Romita and Sandro Hope just works.
  • Run for your money score: 3 out of 5. Some small gems here with big potential.

Here’s the rundown:

  • Issue #1 1st appearance of the Silencer. Brecher and Bloodvessel cameo 1 cover 30k print run via comichron.
  • Issue #2 1st full appearance of Breacher, Blood Vessel, Detail, and Aftermarket. Preview for Brimstone. 1 cover 21k print run.
  • Issue #3 1st appearance of Quietus. Preview for Immortal Men 1 cover (print run unknown at the moment)

All books are easy to find for cover more or less at the moment.
