STATS, STUDS, & STARS
Greetings from the desert fellow CBSI friends. This week is chalked full with some solid books from the week of January 18, 2017. Before we move forward, I wanted to take a look back at the year that was 2017. Many view and consume pie graphs easier than charts so I am going to provide both for reference.
STATS: The above data is in both total dollars and units for last year as a whole per Diamond. Not a lot of surprises there really. Let’s take a more granular look…
This gives a true snapshot of where the dollars are going in the marketplace. Beyond the rapid fanboy bases of certain ahem… you know publishers, this is the raw data. Finally, below is a more in depth look at the unit sales of products invoiced. Totals below gives the dollars & market share in the above graphs.
Raise your hand if you are one of the business and number crunchers in the house enjoy the ability to analyze and decipher that data?!
STARS: Alright, onto the week. There were some great covers by some amazing artists.

Recap:
- 9.8 slabs Variant ratios trending down in cost over time vs. a steady uptake
- Campbell, Ross, Mattina are blue chip artists and higher ratios start hot, then for many titles trend down – Buy early / Flip early or get ready to hibernate those for years
- Dan Mendoza via Action Labs continues to grow the Zombie Tramp Universe.
- WWE again has a smaller print run / 1:100s a good bet if bought cheap
- Week in and week out DC Cover Bs continue to be a safe investment
That’s all for this week. There were some good books that may be had at a cheaper rate vs launch. If found in the wild, pull and hold. Continue to evaluate these more popular titles even with higher ratios. Are they a good investment now or down the road? Or is the money better spent on a proven commodity with a reason the book has value vs. just what’s on the cover. All food for thought…
Talk soon,
Clint
