The Wednesday One 08/08/2018

Welcome to the night before Wednesday One! 08/08/2018

This week is light. I don’t think anything is really great spec wise, but there are always a few cool covers and some good reads to save the week. Fantastic Four is cover crazy with too many to count and far too many store variants which means a crazy high print run. I wish Marvel would limit store variants to only a few per book, but I know they think more now is better even though imo it will lead to less later. But, what do I know? I really hope they eventually bring FF back to the big screen and really do them right with some sweaty Galactus action. Let’s see if there are some gems this week to grab.

Black Badge #1 Cover D Incentive Jeff Lemire Virgin Variant Cover 1:20

I like Lemire’s style and I hope I can find a reasonably priced copy. This book might have a flip chance. It will be relatively low print run and only a few for sale so far. I don’t see any recent sales and the few listed are for ratio. I think if you can grab it for half ratio it has a good chance to flip, but it is a mini-series iirc so dump it quickly if you are going to.

Fantastic Four Vol 6 #1 Cover V Incentive Alex Ross Variant Cover 1:50 and Virgin 1:200

I love this cover mostly because I love the way Ross does fire, but the whole cover is great. The virgin 1:200 doesn’t make sense to me as the logo fits the cover so well. Both seem to be selling for about half ratio, maybe a little under for the 1:50, which is actually really good considering the massive print run this book has. I can’t count how many store variants there are so be cautious. Plus Ross covers tend to not flip as well. I think 25% of ratio is safe. Maybe go a little higher for the 1:200. I grabbed a 1:50 off eBay for $24 shipped because I like it so much. I probably could get it cheaper in a few months, but I didn’t want to wait. Ross is underrated and undervalued imo.

Cool Covers

Catwoman Vol 5 #2 Cover B Variant Stanley Artgerm Lau Cover

This cover is really great. The Joelle cover is good also, but not near this level.

Fantastic Four Vol 6 #1 Cover E Variant Stanley Artgerm Lau

The set is great. I like the Thing cover the best and the Sue is great, but I really don’t want to pay for 4 covers at $6 ea on a book that will have a massive run.

Flash Vol 5 #52 Cover B Variant Dell Otto

Another great Otto and one of the better ones. I kinda want a 9.8 for my PC.

Fantastic Four Vol 6 #1 Cover P Variant Humberto Ramos Cover

The first cover appearance of a new character? is why I included this cover. Can anyone confirm this? I hear a few people talking about it but want sure. I’d probably skip it anyway. I heard there might be a new character Astronomica? but she looks different than this chick from what I saw.

Hawkman Vol 5 #3 Cover B Variant Stjepan Sejic Cover

I love this cover. Sejic is killing it with these Hawkman covers. I think I want a slab of this cover.

Superman Vol 6 #2 Cover B Variant Adam Hughes Cover

I think the face is why I’m not loving this cover. It is a cool perspective and Hughes fans will be grabbing it.

Sandman Universe #1 Cover C Variant Jim Lee Cover

There are a few good covers for this book like the Jae Lee and Mack covers, but I like this one the best. Pick your fav if you are grabbing this read.

Wonder Woman Vol 5 #52 Cover B Variant Jenny Frison Cover

I’m not sure if I really like this cover. I think it is her lips. It has a great overall feel to it and I like the change of pace.

Read it

Sword Daughter #3 Cover A Regular Greg Smallwood Cover

So far I really like this book, I didn’t think I was going to which is a nice surprise.

Predator Hunters II #1 Cover B Variant Andy Brase Cover

I like some of the predator books so I might check this one out.

Detective Comics Vol 2 #986 Cover B Variant Mark Brooks Cover

Tec is solid. Usually Brooks does better covers, but this is still good.

Maestros #7

I really like the interior art. Good read.

Oblivion Song By Kirkman & De Felici #6

This is really good so far and this is the last book in the preview trade.

Port Of Earth #8

I’m behind but want to catch up.

edit. I thought it was optioned but i cant find an article on it so I think I was remembering it wrong.

Darth Vader Vol 2 #19 Cover A Regular Giuseppe Camuncoli & Elia Bonetti Cover

I like this ANH homage cover, but his legs are weird. Vader is a great read.

Animosity Evolution #7

This is on my pull. It is a good offshoot but not as good as the main series.

Hot Lunch Special #1 Cover B Variant Robert Hack Cover

“A midwestern noir series” sold. I’ll check it out.

Relay #2

A Cates inspired story with various writers. The first was good enough that I’ll probably grab the 2nd.

Midnight Task Force #2

A few folks I know liked the first one. I haven’t had a chance to read it. This one might be hard to find as the 1st was a low print run.

Riptide (Red 5 Comics) #1

4 issue mini that sounds interesting. Should be a very low print run so I hope I can grab one at my lcs.

Norah #1

Really cool premise. I hope I can grab one at my lcs.

Blastosaurus #1

This is a reprint of the New Zealand book. I might check it out.

Death Or Glory #4 Cover B Variant Andrew Robinson Cover

Great read so far. Definitely recommend.

Dead Hand #5

This reprint is as good as folks said, eh comrade.

  • Death Of The Inhumans #1 Cover G 2nd Ptg Variant Ariel Olivetti Cover – 2 character deaths on the cover
  • Star Wars Vol 4 #50 Cover H 2nd Ptg Variant Travis Charest Cover – I kinda like the different color for the cover.
  • I think the Unnatural books are stupid, but that is just my take. There is an Artgerm cover that is well done. Unnatural #2 Cover B Variant Stanley Artgerm Lau Cover

Bonus look back – how did last week do a week later?

How did last week’s spec end up doing? We take a look at last week’s predictions and see if we did OK one week later!!!

(Last week’s spec will be quoted like this. What it really did will look like this.)

Cosmic Ghost Rider #2 Cover C Incentive Gerardo Zaffino Variant Cover 1:25 – Recent sales are at ratio. I think it stays there or creeps up a little. I wouldn’t pay over half ratio to be safe, but again I’m super jaded. – This book is averaging $20 with an outlier of $40 a few days ago

Star Wars Last Jedi Adaptation #5 Cover B Incentive David Lopez Variant Cover 1:25 –  It is a ghost so far, but it might be a good flip if you find it for under ratio. – Sales are all over with a high of $60 but only a few sold and $20-30 is more the avg if anything

Justice League Vol 4 #5 Cover C Incentive Jim Lee Pencils Cover 1:100 – One presale at $30 and I think it stays around that or a little lower.  – Recent sales around $30 – Justice League #5 1:100 Lee

Infinity Wars #1 Cover H Incentive Aaron Kuder Variant Cover 1:50 – This is my fav of the IW covers, but I’m a sucker for skulls. It was selling for $25-40, but the last sale was $15 which might be an outlier. I think it ends up selling for half ratio or better, but I don’t think it will be scarce. – This is a big miss on this one with sales $10-20 on avg. The Tedesco has fared better at ~$25 with the winner being the premiere variant at ~$50. I definitely chose poorly.

Wrap Up

There is no “One” this week. For me, the “One” must be undeniable. It should be attainable for many but still rare enough to be a solid flip with a hungry market. Bonus if it has an amazing cover and is a great read. The holy trinity as it were. This week is a sleep in week for the hardcore flippers imo. That is good though as it makes good hunt weeks even better if they aren’t all the time. Not to say there isn’t a buck to be made. I’m going to try to make it a light week and be more picky about the covers and reads I grab. What do Y’all think about this week? Did I miss anything? I do appreciate Y’alls help with ones I miss and things I overlook. This is my grocery list as it were and it can usually do with a tweak. Let me know what Y’all are grabbing and thanks for reading. Also, what would Y’all like to see in a Fantastic Four movie if it were in the MCU? Happy Wednesday!
