The Weekend After Wednesday for 9/22/2018
Want to know which books from yesterday’s new deliveries are already heating up and which ones are cooling? Here’s a “Weekend After” list that we hope will help! This isn’t a reflection on the quality, collectability or long-term potential of recently released books. This is based on today’s market price for books that came out on Wednesday, 9/19/18. They could still be at your shop.
HOT
BATMAN DAMNED #1 (OF 3) (DC) – Start with some shadowy genitalia, then mention that it’s going to be censored moving forward and you have an instant hit. Despite the obvious “distraction” around this book, it’s a fun read, the art is awesome, it made retailers a lot of money and is now filling up paypals on the after market. It was a great book to break up some of the recent back issue craze. I know everyone I chatted with about this book all giggled like teenagers when you mention the “subject”. The jokes that I heard in stores were completely immature… and fun. Regardless of opinion, both the Bermejo A and Lee B covers are selling for $50. The A cover recently jumped up to $60. The Uncorrected Proof Advance Readers copy is going nuts and selling as high as $200. The book has a different title treatment, has the “Uncorrected Proof” text above the DC Black label, it has no text within the interior and also has a different finish on the cover. These have been floating around since July, so copies have been read, shared and tossed around. High-grade copies will be hard to find. With the print run being so high (over 100K), the 1 per store (?) advance copies will be greatly sought after. I expect those prices to keep moving for a while.
EDGE OF SPIDER-GEDDON #3 (OF 4) (MARVEL) – I could not find the B variant for this anywhere. Like #2, I like the A cover better. Cover B is selling for more though at $13 shipped. The A cover is selling for $9/$10 shipped. I personally love grabbing books like this. If you look at the number of keys Spider-Man has and the huge amount of various Spider-characters that have jumped up in price over the past year… any new alternate Spider-Man is now worth grabbing.
JUNIOR HIGH HORRORS #1 (KEENSPOT) – There were only a few sales that jumped up when this hit on Wednesday. It took another day for sales to really start rolling. There are 4 covers, which sell together for $50. The cover D Mike Myers cover sells for $27 shipped, the C Freddy cover hasn’t seen an US sale (except in lots) yet, the B Exorcist variant is the most accessible and sells for $16 to $20 shipped and the main cover A sells for $10/11 shipped. You can buy covers A-C from the Keenspot website for $4.99 each (and are currently available as I write this).
JUSTICE LEAGUE #8 1:100 LEE VARIANT (DC) – Most of the Jim Lee 1:100 sketch variants can’t seem to get past $50. It takes a Joker cover to hit ratio and then pass it. Sales have been slowly climbing all week and have varied recently from $100 to $150. All the current listings are auctions and several are already past $150. The rest of those auctions are pretty close at $125. If your store has this for less than ratio, I would probably grab it. It’s looking to settle at $175.
MR AND MRS X #3 (MARVEL) – This was hitting a steady $50 on Wednesday and Thursday. It has since dropped to $35/38 shipped. There aren’t any cheap copies listed that low right now. So, maybe this first appearance of Xandra will hold and go back up.
LAST WEEK UPDATE
RAGS #1 (ANTARTIC PRESS) – Yeah, so this book hit at completely unexpected levels. Sure, indie books can see some solid prices… but not like this. The standard cover is selling for $80. The virgin variant is now averaging $200 with the most recent sale at $235. I definitely feel the sting of passing on these, but it’s still exciting and fun to see an indie book hit so hard. And a Zombie book no less! The creators have been vocal in their excitement and shock as well. If you were lucky to get copies early at $15 on the Antarctic site or find the standard cover in store, congrats. This is the probably the biggest win of the year. Side note: Is it worth exploring that boobs and bat-wang really moved books this month? I guess that’s for another article.
RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS #26 PUTRI “B” VARIANT (DC)– This is still selling for mostly $12 shipped. Some are moving a little lower and some higher.
RIPTIDE #2 (OF 4) – This fell hard from a height of $60 to $12 shipped. Granted, most prices were around $18 last week. And the current $12 is still pretty good for a week old book.
STAR WARS: RETURN OF THE JEDI #6 MAYHEW 1:25 VARIANT – I’m actually pretty surprised that this dropped from the height of $75 down to it’s current $45 shipped. As mentioned with Riptide, $45 for a week old 1:25 variant is still great.
HOT – THIS TIME LAST YEAR
NADA – Quiet week last year with nothing in HOT or WARM.
WARM
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL #1 (MARVEL) – There are some great covers for this book. The Dell’Otto B cover is awesome and I absolutely love the video game costume brand new day homage 1:10 variant. That’s selling for ratio at $10 and claims the only WARM spot.
COOL
CAPTAIN AMERICA ANNUAL #1 (MARVEL)
CASPER CAPERS #1 (AMERICAN MYTHOLOGY)
DICK TRACY DEAD OR ALIVE #1 (OF 4) (IDW) – What a week for Dick Tracy to come out and get overshadowed by that DC book with a similar theme.
FRANKLIN RICHARDS FANTASTIC YEAR #1 (MARVEL)
GIDEON FALLS #1 DIRECTORS CUT (IMAGE)
GI JOE A REAL AMERICAN HERO SILENT OPTION #1 (OF 4) (IDW)
IMPOSSIBLE INC #1 (OF 5) (IDW)
INFINITY WARS SOLDIER SUPREME #1 (OF 2) (MARVEL)
LIFE OF CAPTAIN MARVEL #3 1:100 VIRGIN VARIANT (MARVEL) – Selling for $70.
OVER GARDEN WALL HOLLOW TOWN #1 (BOOM!)
PATIENCE CONVICTION REVENGE #1 (AFTERSHOCK) – There’s a Stephanie Hans variant limited to 300 copies that is selling for $20. I don’t know if that’s good or bad since I can’t tell if this is a store variant.
PINK PANTHER SURFSIDE SPECIAL #1 (AMERICAN MYTHOLOGY)
RETURN OF WOLVERINE #1 (OF 5) (MARVEL) – There are WAY too many variants for this. And the ratios are crazy. The virgin variants of the various alternate costumes range from ratio 1:100 to 1:1000. I don’t feel like any of these are a must buy. The 1:1000 virgin “whiskers” costume sells for around $200. The remastered McFarlane’s are cool and 1:500 sells for $200 and the 1:1000 B&W sells for around $400.
SKYWARD #6 (IMAGE) – I’m going to mention this book every time a new issue comes out. It’s awesome and easily one of the best books on the shelf. You should absolutely be reading it. Many people have mentioned having a hard time finding the 2nd issue (which is why it sells for $11-$15 on eBay), so it’s worth noting that the first TPB also came out this week.
