The Weekend After Wednesday for 9/29/2018
Want to know which books from Wednesday’s new deliveries are already heating up and which ones are cooling? Here’s a “Weekend After” list that we hope will help! This isn’t a reflection on the quality, collectability or long-term potential of recently released books. This is based on today’s market price for books that came out on Wednesday, 9/26/18. They could still be at your shop.
STAR WARS DOCTOR APHRA #24 REIS BOBA FETT B VARIANT (MARVEL) – As Ben mentioned in the top 10, this is selling for $15/$18 shipped. That’s pretty great for a standard B variant.
VENOM FIRST HOST #5 GARRON VARIANT (MARVEL) – Here’s another Marvel standard B variant that’s picking up some heat and currently selling for $12-$14 shipped. It’s a cool cover, so I can see some small jumps for this.
BONUS – NEXT WEEK HEAT
VENOM AMC OPENING WEEKEND GIVEAWAY – While only a few copies are up as pre-orders, one copy is currently at auction @ $50 with 3 days left. We’ll see how this fares when people start getting copies in hand after the release on the 5th. It’s an awesome cover and condition is not going to be great (manhandled by AMC employees & by non-comic fan customers). The print run must be large to be able to provide copies for every AMC on opening weekend.
LAST WEEK UPDATE
BATMAN DAMNED #1 (OF 3) (DC) – To be honest, BATMAN DAMNED maybe the hottest book in years and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down. I honestly can’t think of another book in the past several years that sold in such high volume while also maintaining a high value (despite fluctuations). To those just joining the hobby recently (maybe even by picking up a copy of this), this is not the norm. The news from DC of “Batman Damned #1 Will not be reprinted at this time” is helping ramp sales back up. Here’s how these are currently doing (from www.covrprice.com), keeping in mind that most “HOT” books sell about 50/60 copies in a week:
BERMEJO COVER A – COPIES SOLD: 1,399 (not including lots)
BERMEJO COVER A – PRICE: $70 average ($90 for NM, $64 for VF/NM)
BERMEJO COVER A – GRADED 9.8: $225
JIM LEE VARIANT – COPIES SOLD: 724 (not including lots)
JIM LEE VARIANT – PRICE: $71 average ($100 for NM, $60 for VF/NM)
JIM LEE VARIANT – GRADED 9.8: $250
2 COVER A&B SET – PRICE: $140
ADVANCE PROOF EDITION – COPIES SOLD: 49 (half from sales pre-release day) (not including lots)
ADVANCE PROOF EDITION – PRICE: $300 to $500 for VF/NM
ADVANCE PROOF EDITION SET (all 3 covers) – PRICE: $899.99 ($995 for a signed set)
BONUS: One sale sold 30 copies (10 cover A, 20 cover B) together for a total of $2,226!!
EDGE OF SPIDER-GEDDON #3 (OF 4) (MARVEL) – Prices vary on these, but Cover A has pretty much settled to cover price and the B variant is selling for $10 shipped.
JUNIOR HIGH HORRORS #1 (KEENSPOT) – All of these covers are still doing decently. The cover D Mike Myers cover dropped the hardest to $15 shipped, the C Freddy @ $10, the B Exorcist variant @ $12 and the main cover A still sells for $10/11 shipped.
JUSTICE LEAGUE #8 (DC) – After a high sale of $396 on 9/23, under-cutters help drag this 1:100 sketch variant down to a steady $200. There are only 3 copies currently listed, so this should be going back up very soon and will most likely command a high price long-term. Sneakily, the color version has been selling a ton of copies and trending at $12 shipped.
MR AND MRS X #3 NOTO 1:25 VARIANT (MARVEL) – This was $50 when it came out, then dropped to $35 and has been back up to a very steady $50 all week. Copies are drying up too… looks like it’s even due for a price bump.
HOT – THIS TIME LAST YEAR
REDNECK #6 FELICI PINK/RED SIGNATURE VARIANT (IMAGE) – While I’m not a fan of signature variants, the market sure was last year. This variant was selling for $35 to $40. One year later it’s…. well… hard to tell. Only two copies are listed, both at $30, but not a single copy has sold in months. It looks like the last couple sales were on 2/3/18 @ $25 and 12/23/17 @ $12. Before those, sales sold for mostly $25. Technically, if you found this for cover, it’s still a win.
SPIDER-GWEN #24 (MARVEL) – Okay, so I try to never say outright that I dislike a cover, but this was/is definitely on that list. Last year, this was selling for about $10 shipped. One year later, it’s gone up! Despite consistent low price sales from MyComicShop @ cover price, it sells for $25 shipped. Apparently plenty of people like this cover… or maybe collectors just want the first appearance of Gwenom.
HEROES IN CRISIS #1 (OF 7) MATTINA 1:200 VARIANT (DC) – Obviously, this was one of the hottest books of the week. So, why WARM? Honestly, most copies are selling at ratio of $200. Some sales are higher and some are lower. You can still find copies under $200 (granted, not many). So, this book is teetering on the fence of increasing or dropping in price. Historically, any ratio “event” variant tend to not do well long-term. The convention foil variant doesn’t help this either. We’ll have to see how rare this is when/if copies dry up. All the other variants are selling below ratio: Brooks 1:100 @ $35, Jones 1:50 @ $16.
HIGH HEAVEN #1 (AHOY COMICS) – This book keeps selling for either $5 or $15. Prices are pretty inconsistent. There aren’t many copies listed.
BATGIRL #27 (DC) – While this is selling for cover price, Middleton’s range of style is quite impressive. You can tell he’s having fun trying out different covers and proving that not only can he keep up with the hottest artists in the industry… but he may be (arguably) one of the best.
DOOMSDAY CLOCK #7 (DC) – Apparently, seeing Dr. Manhattan’s penis in this issue didn’t quite capture the market’s attention like it did with Batman. However, it’s not really shocking when you have a character that is always naked like Dr. M.
EDGE OF SPIDER-GEDDON #4 (OF 4) (MARVEL) – Did these disappear for everyone else? Both of my comic shops were sold out within an hour of opening. They’re both mostly selling for cover price, but the standard cover is seeing a few higher sales at $10 shipped. I don’t see this one gaining any long term heat.
F$$$ OFF SQUAD GN (SILVER SPROCKET)
FRIENDO #1 (VAULT) – So, yes, cover B is selling for $10 shipped. However, that was one sale on the 26thand every other copy is just sitting.
JUSTICE LEAGUE ODYSSEY #1 (DC) – 1:50 DODSON Variant is selling for $25.
SPIDERGEDDON #0 (MARVEL) – Here’s another book that’s all over the place. Most covers are selling under ratio. The best covers are definitely the store variants. The Christopher 1:25 variant is “hanging” in there at around $23 shipped. The Tedesco 1:50 is selling below ratio @ $30.
STAR TREK VS TRANSFORMERS #1 (OF 4) (IDW) – It’s worth noting that the 1:25 Charm Variant is selling for $25. While this is at ratio, in my experience, most shops sell these IDW variants for cheap.
UNCLE SCROOGE MY FIRST MILLIONS #1 (OF 4) (IDW) – Again, it’s worth noting that the 1:10 variant is almost dried up. VF/NM copies have been selling for $14 shipped. There are only two listed copies left. One is at $14 and another at $25. Could be worth grabbing a copy if it’s below $10.
VAMPIRELLA DEJAH THORIS #1 (DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT) – I do like the Louw store variant.
X-MEN RED #8 (MARVEL) – I LOVE the Frison standard cover (selling for cover price).
