Wednesday Warriors 4/24/19
Welcome to the NEW Wednesday Warriors!
Each week we will go head to head picking just ONE book in each category in a battle for NCBD supremacy. Best of all, you get to pick the winner! Sound off in the comments if you’re #TeamSimpleman or #TeamBolo and we will recap each week in the following weeks Column.
So its Brian vs. Jack.
Simpleman vs. Bolo.
And there can be only ONE.
Most Looking Forward to Reading Marvel
I’m a huge fan of Disney in general, but truly love Disney World. This book ties in and tells the backstory of the new Star Wars land being added to both Disneyland and Disney World with Black Spire Outpost, a place frequented by smugglers, merchants, and travelers. It also has the first appearance of Dok-Ondar.
This won’t have the heat that Lemire/Cates previous run did, but Thanos is hot right now. The relationship between Thanos and Gamora will be front and center in this series. In a slow week, it’s worth a read to see if it draws my interest. I don’t expect a lot of spec potential here.
Most Looking Forward to Reading DC
Oh how I wish I had a phone that gave me a superpower every time I placed a call!
With Arkham Knight only showing up in the final page in the last two books, there will be those who put this book in the first appearance category. I understand that argument. Either way I think there could be money in this arc. It has been a good read and is bringing in a popular cult character.
Most Looking Forward to Reading Indie
I can’t get enough of this book! If you enjoy or are interested in a supernatural ninja/samurai story this is a book you should be reading!
Punk Mambo is essentially Valiant Entertainment’s answer to the Harley Quinn craze. Don’t sleep on this book and it’s variants. Quite literally everything ever released Punk Mambo has risen in value over time.
I’m sure most people will disagree and say how much better they like the 1:25 Zaffino. I say, balderdash!!! Gerald Parel has been crushing it with his cover art lately and this cover is amazing and depicts what the miniseries is about, the relationship between Thanos and Gamora.
I don’t care! I’m a homer! Shoot me lol! No cover is more striking to me this week than that of Nathan Gooden’s Tec #31 Homage for Queen of Bad Dreams #1. This book has serious buzz and whole there are 3 Vault Vintage Homages available, this one takes the cake. Oh and it can be purchased EXCLUSIVELY right here on ComicBookInvest.com.
Regular Price Variant Marvel
We get a great War of the Realms tie in story by Cullen Bunn and a killer cover by one of the most popular cover artists in today’s market with In-Hyuk Lee.
This week sees the release of several Immortal Hulk late printings. Issue #12 sells for $15 regularly in 1st print. Unlike a lot of Immortal Hulk late printings, I like this cover change.
Regular Price Variant DC
I think the Batman Beyond series is overlooked and underrated! In this issue we get a new villain known as the Splitt and a subtle yet gorgeous cover by Ben Oliver.
Naomi #1 Cover A first print is $100, Cover B is $60, and the 2nd print is $30. That’s all the info I need to know to buy into this one at cover price. Even at $10 this one would be a big win.
Regular Price Variant Indie
Spawn has been a pain lately as Image Comics changes the covers and even the solicits at the last minute. Witness the secrets of Al Simmons’ past, present, and future as Spawn as builds to it’s epic 300th issue. Say what you want about Mattina but his covers are amazing!
Ok, so I already picked one Vault Vintage, but I HAVE to pick another. This one is available for cover price. COVER PRICE!. Looking how these have trended, this Madame Xanadu Homage is a must buy on release day at cover price or below.
This book will be under ordered and not too many shops will qualify for the 1:50. Not store exclusives to act as their crutch to get them copies. Bill Sienkiewicz + Wolverine + Moon Knight = Liquid Hot Magma!
Ohhhhh Brian you took my pick here. So, I will go with the MOST talked about book releasing this week even though people are burnt out on it at this point. If you can get this for ratio, I imagine it would be easy money. I’m not sure I would pay the $75-$125 people want for it.
Top Spec Pick
Issue #1 of a 3 issue mini tie-in. Heroes of Earth team up with heroes of Asgard. And they are lead by Valkyrie! This is another book I think may be under ordered and the growing popularity of Valkyrie’s character with the already established and sustained popularity of the X-Men could prove to be success for this book in the near and longer term future.
I have a feeling this one will be a huge gainer. Look what issue #1 did!!!! I expect even less sales for issue #2. BOLO
Classic character, Eisner award winner author in Michael Avon Oeming. Eisner and Harvey award winner cover artist Kyle Barker. This book could catch people off guard as their attention is drawn to sparkly objects elsewhere on release day.
I have picked both of the first two Sierra Muerte Incentives so we might as well keep the streak alive. The cover art for this one flew under the radar for some time, not being added to Midtown until Tuesday morning. That may have helped this one stay low key, but it won’t last. This digital cover is very different from traditional Joe covers and features not one but two female characters on the cover. This cover is just different and I could see Joe diehards (like me) to be all over this one. Supply will not meet demand.
Last Week Look Back
Readers Categories : Bolo took this section 2-0-1 with his picks of Naomi #4 and Major X #2. Both books are selling for $10-15. Who says reading picks aren’t spec picks? The final tie came between Bolo’s pick of Knights of the Golden Sun #6 and Simpleman’s Little Bird #2. Both sell for cover price briskly but haven’t jumped above cover yet.
Reg Price Variants: Like a lot of weeks, few of these really popped on the secondary market. Simpleman and Bolo pushed both Marvel and DC but Bolo edged out a win with Knights of the Golden Sun #1 2nd print hitting $8-15.
Cover Art- Push. Neither of our books did anything on the secondary Market
Flip Categories: Simpleman took these three categories 2-1 winning Spec Pick with the Angel #0 Thank You Variant out performing the Frison variant from Buffy and Brian’s Sleeper of Knights of the Golden Sun #1 2nd print turned out to be a winner. Bolo won the Incentive category with his Rob Liefeld loyalty as Major X #2 1:25 Noto variant was an easy above ratio profit maker.
Final: Bolo Wins 3-2-3
Bolo eeks out the victory in week one. What did you guys think? Who took last week? Who will win this week? Sound off in the comments!
