Wednesday Warriors 6/12/19
Welcome to the NEW Wednesday Warriors!
Each week we will go head to head picking just ONE book in each category in a battle for NCBD supremacy.
Best of all… you get to pick the winner!
Sound off in the comments if you’re #TeamSimpleman or #TeamBolo and we will recap each week in the following weeks Column.
So its Brian vs. Jack.
Simpleman vs. Bolo.
And there can be only ONE.
Most Looking Forward to Reading Marvel
If anyone can make Silver Surfer relevant again it’s Donny Cates. The comic world has been buzzing in anticipation over Cates writing this book and it’s finally here.
I’m in love with this series. I don’t care who knows it. This is my favorite Marvel read right now. Excited to add a little female flavor in the mix this week.
Most Looking Forward to Reading DC
This issue brings us the finale of the Arkham Knight saga. I still miss Peter J Tomasi’s run on Superman but this Detective Comics arc has been one for the ages.
I have long been an advocate of following the money. DC has put a ton behind the advertising of the acquisition of Brian Michael Bendis from Marvel. This is his first big event story and is falling under a lot of radar.
Most Looking Forward to Reading Indie
Not so much a firecracker but more of a sparkler when it comes to spec, but I really like the premise of this book and look forward to reading it.
We talked about the creation of a new big bad on Ponyville with Cosmos in issue #75. This issue is the conclusion to that story and should give us an idea if this is a character here to stay. My kids have really dug this story. I think speculators should pay more attention to this kids properties. They may just be the next wave of option excitement.
This cover is absolutely stunning! I love this homage to Batman #42 and this is a cover that demands attention.
This cover got immediate hype upon release. Unfortunately it has gotten the one million store variants treatment from Image Comics. So many color variations and virgin options will likely affect the success of this one. Nonetheless, still knock out artwork from AH!.
Regular Price Variant Marvel
This In-Hyuk Lee cover is full of nostalgia, I love all of the little kids wearing Spider-Man costumes, accessories, and even the dog joining in on the action.
There is also one for Symbiote Spiderman #3. These secret variants have done well, but dealers are reporting 50/50 allocation so we will see. BOLO
Regular Price Variant DC
A hot character with a variant by a hot artist in Jenny Frison. This is one book that I’ll pick up everytime I see it for cover or less.
I am all in on this Leviathan series. Who is inLeviathan? Who is the man in the Red Hood and Star Wars looking mask?
Regular Price Variant Indie
So happy retailers are using new cover art on second print issues. This issue kicked off a new era of Transformers and I look forward to picking up this cover.
Slow week for Indie variants but I like this one as a bit of a sleeper. It falls perfectly into the horror/ fantasy craze we seem to have embarked upon. I’m interested to see how the book is and I definitely like the Variant best.
I’m not a big fan of Lucio Parrillo covers but one character he knocks out of the park is Red Sonja. I love this virgin variant and think a lot of people overlooked this in pre-orders.
I don’t expect this one to hit some of the highs of previous issues. Having said that, I still would expect this Nodent Variant to hit 3x ratio post release day. BOLO
Top Spec Pick
This could be the very reason Brian Michael Bendis was brought to DC. I think this story could have long lasting effects across the DC Universe before it is over. The best speculation picks are the ones that have an extremely low buy in. I’ll buy this $4 lottery ticket. It costs less than a cup of that fancy crappy mermaid coffee.
I hate these Second Print incentives, and yet I can not stop picking them. This virgin incentive variant features a cover shot of Aero, who first appears in the book and who has already had a solo series announced form.
Although it’s a second print, I love the new cover and this is a key issue with multiple first appearances. The only downside is Marvel publishing an incentive 2nd print variant as well and store exclusive virgin variant will decrease the demand for this cover.
I love the Mcfarlane esque 90’s nostalgia to this incentive variant. The 80’s variant from #3 seems to be a hit and I imagine similar success from this one. Kaare Andrews has been on a real run of late.
Last Week Look Back
I won’t even break these down individually because it’s bad, real bad. Dark Horse spec hear saved us each once.
Final: Bolo 4 – 1 – 5
Brian made a step in the right direction coming back from last weeks blowout but Walking Dead #192 in two categories for Bolo helped seal the win. RIP Rick Grimes.
What did you guys think? Who took last week? Who will win this week? Sound off in the comments!
